The first land battle of the
Revolution in the South was at Ninety Six, South Carolina, November 19-21,
1775. In 1780, the British controlled South Carolina. Ninety Six
was the key to the back country. Here the British built a star shaped
fort of earthen embankment and withstood a 29 day siege by General Greene
and his army. Star Fort is intact and visible today.
