HEROES AND HEROINES OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION
(Series)
THE MAN WHO LOVED THE FLAG
by Idella Bodie
A concise biography for elementary-school
students of Sergeant William Jasper, one of South Carolina's Revolutionary War
heroes. As British guns shelled the little palmetto fort of Sullivan’s Island known as
Fort Moultrie, enemy fire broke the flag pole causing it to fall outside of the fort. Sergeant
William Jasper leapt over the wall and saved the flag as cannons boomed and rifle fire showered around him.
The blue flag , with the added palmetto tree design, has since served as the
South Carolina state flag.
